In the article, Laci and Johnny Davis share their inspiring story of founding Grit Game Marketing in 2022 after a combined 16-plus-year career in the pool and spa industry. Influenced by a TED Talk on “grit” by Angela Duckworth, the couple embraced the concept as the foundation for their new venture. They knew that creating something impactful would require determination and resilience.
Initially starting as a business consulting company, Grit Game Marketing made a pivotal shift when a manufacturer asked them to represent their products nationwide. This request led to creating a national rep organization dedicated to providing top-notch services and building strong relationships with its principals.
Assembling a Dream Team
Laci and Johnny faced the challenge of assembling a team of seasoned professionals who shared their values and vision. They prioritized hiring industry veterans with extensive experience and a strong network. This selective approach ensured that The Grit Game hit the ground running and quickly established itself as a reputable firm.
Despite initial skepticism from potential team members, the allure of being part of something groundbreaking convinced many to join. Today, the company boasts a team of over 22 seasoned employees and represents 15 partnering principals, five of which are on a national level.
Expanding Beyond Product Representation
Grit Game Marketing is more than just a rep firm. The agency offers a wide range of services, including business consulting, Netsuite administration, website design and hosting, and full marketing services for businesses in the backyard leisure space. The agency also operates a warehouse in Huntsville, Alabama, providing third-party logistical services for manufacturers.
Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead
Like any new venture, Grit Game Marketing faced numerous challenges, including launching during the tail end of the pandemic. However, their commitment to building strong partnerships and maintaining a flexible, innovative approach has been key to their success.
Johnny Davis highlights the importance of communication and setting proper expectations with principals to ensure effective collaboration. Looking to the future, the Davises have ambitious plans for global expansion, aiming to have a presence in Canada, Latin America, and Europe within the next five years.
